Un réalisateur de films intransigeant, John Wilson, s'apprête à tourner une superproduction en Afrique. Il est peu à peu captive par un autre projet: celui de partir à la chasse à l'éléphant. En 1951 Peter Viertel, romancier, accompagne John Huston en Afrique sur le tournage d'"African Queen". Il en tire un ouvrage "Chasseur blanc, coeur noir" qui, declare-t-il, "ne traite pas d'"African Queen". C'est le portrait d'un réalisateur en proie à une obsession envahissante qui, pour lui, passe avant tout. Une obsession dont le prix sera exorbitant."
